I didn't set out to build a display company. I set out to survive - and somewhere along the way, 500+ markets, a lot of rain, and a deep hatred of bad-looking stalls turned into Standout.
Chapter 01
From a Czech village to Irish markets
I grew up in a tiny Czech village. In 2004, I landed in Ireland with a backpack, questionable English, and zero plans beyond "survive." I worked hospitality, retail - the usual immigrant starter pack.
Then 2018 arrived and life threw an emotional meteor at me. Most people run or journal. I crumbled, then picked up woodworking, because hitting things with a mallet felt cheaper than therapy. Started with chopping boards. Then furniture. Then one day someone at a market said "can you make me a sign?" and everything changed.
Chapter 02
500+ markets. One lesson.
By 2020 I was knee-deep in craft markets, swearing at gazebos, and stealing heat from neighbouring coffee stalls. I did 500+ markets - which is either impressive or a cry for help. Still not sure.
Other traders started asking: "Can you make my sign?" "Could you build me a stand that doesn't fall over like mine?" "Do you accept payment in brownies?" (Yes.)
Every weekend taught me something. What holds up in wind. What falls apart in rain. What makes customers stop versus walk past. None of that knowledge comes from a catalogue.
Chapter 03
How Standout was born
Standout happened completely by accident - powered by tea, stubbornness, and a genuine frustration with the options available to market traders.
Everything I make is flat-pack, tool-free, and built to handle real market conditions. Not because a designer spec'd it that way - because I've personally set up in every type of Irish weather known to humankind and built these things to survive it.
I'm still learning. Still sanding at 11pm. But I love this world. And if you're a trader, you're my people.
